Breast Implant Dangers
Breast Implant Dangers Among several complications which could be involved when a woman undergoes breast enlargement surgery is one that is often overlooked by many. What are the dangers of the breast implants themselves? In this article we discuss just that. Once a woman gets through the pain, possible infection, numbness and many other problems that could occur after the surgery, some women think they are “home free” and begin to live their lives with larger breasts. However, 3 percent of these women will find themselves experiencing a complication that some of them never even thought about. Leakage of the breast implant is a serious issue which results in a deflated implant and a necessity to undergo another dangerous surgical procedure. That’s 3 out of 100. Are you willing to take that risk? About Breast Implant Leaks and Breaks As safe as people will have you believe breast enlargement surgery is, the simple fact is that there are complications and they do happen. Sometimes, breast implants may leak or even break. Although most implants today are filled with saline water, which is safe to the body of breakage does occur, the result will be uneven breasts and the decision to either have another surgery or leave it as-is. If a woman has silicone breast implants, as opposed to the saline implants we discussed above, then the story is entirely different. When a silicone breast implant leaks or breaks, one of two different scenarios will take place. If a contracture scar has formed around the implant, the woman may not realize anything at all as the breast area will not change in shape or hardness. On the other hand, if a contracture scar has not formed around the implant, then leakage into the surrounding tissue will occur, resulting in a sensation that the implant is deflating. From here, the body will either form scar tissue around the leaked silicone, which will happen if the leakage is contained in a small area, or the silicone will begin to migrate to other area of the body. This migration is usually done through the lymphatic system as there are large lymph nodes around the armpit area on both sides of the chest. If the silicone gel has migrated though the lymph system, it may not be possible for doctors to remove the silicone completely from your body. Many researchers believe that this will result in the future development of several different types of connective tissue disorders. The most common complication resulting from breast implant surgery is capsular contracture. Capsular contracture is scar tissue that naturally forms around the implant as the body attempts to heal itself. This causes the breast(s) to become very hard to the touch and slightly larger than normal. Additional surgery is usually recommended to remove the scar tissue and possibly replace the implant. In clinical studies, researchers have found that post-operative breast implant patients who received saline implants developed capsular contractures on an average of 9%. Another study done by the US FDA which looked at the rupture of post-operative silicone implants found that 55% of the implants studies had ruptured. Of the 344 women in the study, 73 of them or 21% had silicone gel in one or both breasts, outside of the implants. Factors that were determined to be associated with the rupturing included age of the implant, whether or not the implant was inserted above or below the muscle tissue and the manufacturer of the implant. The most common causes of saline and silicone gel-filled implant leaks and breaks include: cutting of the implant by surgical tools during the surgical procedure, improper filling of the implant with Saline Solution, capsular contracture, trauma or extreme physical manipulation, excessive “squeezing” of the breast implant during mammography procedures, aging of the implant, implant placement through a small incision and other unknown reasons.
